OTEMISM: SOCIO-LINGUISTIC STUDY OF AN IDEA RELATED TO ANIMALS

Abstract

This paper is the research study of social life in a society which pertains to pre-historic age. Totemism is a symbolic belief in which a person, family or clan sets up their relationship with its parts, things and living beings, which form part of their life and come into contact in one way or the other; those actors are called totems. The actors which come into contact with a person can be animals or living things, viz: a plant, insect, bird or even a mythical entity. They have their own language of understanding each other; may be through rituals, marriages, ethics, sacred beliefs, good or bad omens etc. Such beliefs or festivals were prevalent among many centuries viz: Africa, America, Malaysia, India, etc.
